The Expansion Board

The Expansion Board adds a wealth of new capabilities to the Handy
Board: 10 additional analog inputs, 9 digital outputs, 6 servo motor
outputs, 4 LEGO sensor inputs, easy connection of the Polaroid 6500
ultrasonic ranging system, and an open prototyping area.
Handy Board Sensor/Motor
Kit (SMKIT), $39.00
Our Sensor/Motor kit is designed to make it easy for you to put the
Handy Board to use. We provide everything necessary to built a variety
of sensor and motor assemblies. The kit includes four DC motors, two
CdS photocell light sensors, two touch sensors, two reflective
infrared sensors, one rolling-ball inclination sensor, and
construction materials.

Instructions for wiring the sensors and motors are provided in the
Handy Board Technical Reference manual. Please note that actual
sensors provided may vary slightly from those shown in the photograph,
and the hall-effect sensor is no longer provided.
Super Cricket Microcontroller (SUPERCX), $99.00
The Super Cricket is a tiny robotics controller thats with
even more sensor and motor I/O! It can control 4 DC motors, 8 servo
motors, and receive input from 6 sensors.
Like the Handy Cricket, the Super Cricket uses the easy to learn Logo
language, and has a built-in IR port for program download and
inter-Cricket communications.

The Super
Cricket
|
The Cricket runs off of four AA batteries; the battery
holder is mounted to the Cricket itself. Crickets also include
a piezo beeper for sound output, a run/stop button and
program running status
LED, and a 4K-byte EEPROM memory for user code.

Crickets also have two bus ports which will allow for
future expansion. Using the bus ports, each Cricket can control up to
a dozen or more custom peripheral devices, such as advanced sensors,
LED displays, and relays.

Now available! The Cricket USB IR Beamer lets a desktop or laptop computer
talk to a Cricket for program download. The Beamer connects to
a host computer using a standard USB port.

Cricket Serial IR Beamer
|
The Cricket Serial-IR Interface lets a desktop or laptop
computer talk to a Cricket for program download. The
Interface communicates at 9600 baud with the host computer
and with the Cricket at 50 kbaud, using a custom protocol.
The interface runs off a 9v battery.
The Serial-IR Interface has a DB9 female serial connector;
In the Cricket Start Kit, Gleason Research bundles a DB9-male-to-DB9-female cable for easy
connection to a standard 9-pin PC serial port. Adapters for older PCs
with 25-pin serial ports and Macintosh computers are available.

The Cricket uses a solderless connector, so its much
easier to wire sensors and motors to the Cricket than to the
Handy Board. The Cricket Sensor/Motor Kit is a custom GR
product to make it easy to get your Cricket up and running.
It includes:
- a DC motor matched to the Cricket's motor driver,
- a tiny light bulb,
- a CdS photocell light sensor,
- a pushbutton switch touch sensor,
and all of the necessary wires and plugs to properly hook
these devices up to your Cricket.

Distance Sensor for Cricket (CX-DIST), $29.00

The
CX-DIST distance sensor
|
CX-DIST is the Sharp GP2D12 optical distance sensor with a custom
adapter cable fully wired for the Cricket. This device uses infrared
light to measure distances from 10 cm (4 in.) to 80 cm (12 in.). It
has a lens and a linear position detector, so it's actually measuring
the position of a projected spot of IR illumination (not its
brightness). It's a very popular sensor for robotics applications.

The Lamp/Relay Driver Board is a Bus Device for the Super
Cricket. It provides seven independently controlled power
outputs suitable for operating incandescent lamps, relays, LEDs, or small
motors. Up to fifteen Driver Boards can be connected to a single
Super Cricket.

Motor/Sensor Expansion Board (Bus Device for Handy Cricket, CX-MSEXP), $29.00

The Motor/Sensor Expansion Board is a Bus Device for the Handy
Cricket. It provides two additional DC motor outputs and four
additional sensor inputs. The sensor inputs may also be used as event
counters and with shaft encoder sensors. Up to two Expansion Boards
can be connected to a single Handy Cricket.

The USB-to-Serial Adapter Cable plugs into your computer's USB port and provides a standard DB9M serial port for use with the

Macintosh Modem Cable

The Macintosh Modem cable has a minidin-8 plug on one end and a
DB25-male plug on the other. It's used with older Macintoshes (pre
iMac, pre USB) with printer and modem ports.

With the Handy Board, the Mac modem cable connects the older
Mac to the HB's Serial Interface/Battery Charger board.
With Crickets, the Mac modem cable plus an XT adapter
(see below) connects the older Mac to the Cricket Serial-IR
Interface.

The XT Mouse Adapter has a DB25-female plug on one end and
a DB9-male plug on the other. It's used to convert the 25-pin
serial ports on older PCs (the XT standard) to the
newer 9-pin standard. It's also used to connect from the Mac
modem cable to the Cricket's Serial-IR Interface.
